"I have only used it once so far but ignition of the charcoal was fine. Since I have a stock of the regular square lighters my next thing to do is see how they work in the tool as I don’t want to waste them. Then I will get the new lighter blocks. One thing I did notice was a lot more smoke coming from the lower vent than usual. That did settle down eventually."
"The result was fantastic, however as this is a first gen of its kind, there is an issue. The starter roll sitting in the cradle of the starter won’t fit in the opening at the bottom of the large green egg. I had to insert the holder, then wedge the starter roll in and lie it on top of the holder already inside the green egg. That was cumbersome and not the intended use, however once that was inside, I lit the starter roll and it worked beautifully."
"I understand the importance of air flow starting the Egg. I’ve only used the Kit once. For the cost, not sure the value is there. I think I will cut the starter log in half and bury half in the lump charcoal and light the other half as planned under the new grate. Maybe that will convince me it was worth $150."
"Just used this and it worked great. I have a kick ash basket and can. I set the grate on top of the can and the basket on top of the grate. Everything fit well. From lighting to white coals took about 20-25 minutes or one beer. I am curious if this is a bit more of a solution to a problem that didn’t exist. I could also say that if you have a kick ash basket and can, then you really only need the lighting wand thing and not the grate. All of that said, quality is on par for BGE. Solid materials and very effective for what it is designed to do. Would recommend for those of us that like gadgets."

"This is a game changer for getting your egg fired up reliably. Too many times I've tried to light my egg and it would take over an hour to get going - often because as charcoal breaks down it would clog up the bottom vents and reduce airflow, which was really hard to manage without completely cleaning out the charcoal basin. . . I've used this a few times now and my egg is hot for steaks within 30 minutes. Which means I can now reliably plan to grill for the family on work/school nights during the week when I previously just stopped attempting for too many delayed starts. Now the flip side of this – BGE needs to do the right thing and make this upgraded grate the standard on all new egg production. The old one is just bad in comparison. Put this grate in all new eggs and customer satisfaction will pay off – then you can still sell the bottom light tool separately for those who buy new eggs, and as a package for those who are upgraded older models."
