How to Put Out & Re-light Your Egg

How to Put Out & Re-light Your Egg

Your New Cooking Ritual

Loading and lighting your Big Green Egg isn’t just a task—it’s a fun ritual that’ll feel second nature in no time! Embrace the joy of cooking outdoors and make this part of your grilling routine.

Close the Vents to Save Fuel

After a cook, you might notice some of your charcoal has a white hue while others are still black. Good news! That black coal is still full of potential and can be reused. To prevent any waste, simply close the rEGGulator Cap and Draft Door completely. This will extinguish the fire by cutting off oxygen, allowing any remaining charcoal to cool down and remain unburned.

Rake Away the Ashes

When it’s time to fire up your Egg again, give those old charcoal a good rake! This helps the ash fall through the Fire Grate, clearing the way for a smooth cook. Open the Draft Door and use your trusty Ash Tool to scoop out the ash into an Ash Pan (remember, any warm embers should be safely extinguished in a bucket of sand or water).

Load & Light

Top off your Big Green Egg with some fresh charcoal and light it up as usual. If you find a bit of debris from your last cook, let it burn for about 20 minutes at high heat to clean things up nicely. For more tips on keeping your Egg in tip-top shape, check out our ‘How to Clean Your Egg’ guide.
