Mouth-Watering Wings on the EGG
National Chicken Wing Day
National Chicken Wing Day is an annual celebration of one of America’s favorite snacks. Every year, on the last Saturday in July, people all over the country come together to enjoy a delicious plate of chicken wings. It’s estimated that Americans consume around 1.38 billion wings each year – that’s enough for everyone in the US to have about four wings!
The history of chicken wings can be traced back as far as Buffalo, New York in 1964 when they were first served at Anchor Bar. Since then, they’ve become a staple food item for many American households and restaurants alike.
On National Chicken Wing Day this year (Saturday, July 29th), why not fire up your Big Green Egg and cook some delicious crispy chicken wings with live fire smoke flavor?
Cook Perfectly Crispy Chicken Wings
Cook perfectly crispy chicken wings without frying them, using the live fire smoke flavor from the Big Green Egg’s Natural Lump Charcoal. With these simple tips, we will show you how to get the crispiest wings straight off the Big Green Egg, no grease involved!
At least one hour before cooking your wings, take them out of the package, place them on a baking sheet and pat them with a paper towel until completely dry. Place the wings in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook.
After refrigerating for at least an hour, remove chicken wings and season. You can season the wings simply with just salt and pepper, or use any of the six Big Green Egg Seasonings or your favorite BBQ seasoning. We suggest tossing the wings in some melted butter first to make the seasoning stick better, and apply the seasoning generously. Be creative and experiment with different flavors … the options are endless!
We recommend two ways to cook chicken wings on an EGG: direct or indirect. Direct cooking gives the skin more char and takes less time, while indirect cooking takes longer to cook and provides less char. We suggest trying both methods to find your preferred cooking style for chicken wings.
If you prefer dry-rubbed wings, you can start eating them now. However, to make them even more delicious, add a sauce or topping such as garlic, parmesan, or chives to your wings. If you like saucy wings, try the Big Green Egg Barbecue Sauces or the Big Green Egg Hot Sauces.
No matter how you cook or season your wings, don’t forget to share your results on social media by tagging @biggreenegg and using hashtag #biggreenegg
